National Gathering of Farmer-Led Watershed
Initiatives

New Approaches and New Tools for Whole Farm Planning to Protect
our Nation's Natural Resources

There are over 700 watersheds around the United States where
farmers are self-organized to protect the soil, water, and habitat of
their bio-regions. In many of these watersheds, creative new tools
and innovative approaches are changing the face of farming and
changing our ideas about conservation and environmental
protection.

In conjunction with the Farming Systems Research-Extension
Symposium, representatives of major farmer-led watershed
protection initiatives will gather in Ames, Iowa on Sunday,
November 5th from 10:00 until 4:00 to present and discuss new
approaches, tools, and bio-region-based approaches being tested
and implemented across the country. (The symposium will begin
that evening).

Workshop Topics Will Include:

* Whole Farm Planning to Protect New York City's Water
Supply
* Nutrient Balance Tools: Evaluating Different Approaches
* Dutch Pesticide "Yardsticks": Introducing Them to the U.S.
* Results Rewarding for Watershed Protection: New Research
* Reducing Phosphorus Loading: Targeting Major Pollutants
