resistance to locally important pests and diseases. Discusses
the pitfalls of classical plant breeding and the green
revolution, case histories of crops which have been
successfully bred to overcome blights and insects, and how to

*Conversion to an Organic Strawberry Production System in
Coastal Central California: A Comparative Study, 1994.
Stephen R. Gliessman, et. al. Findings of a three year study
which examined two strawberry production systems in
California: one system converted from conventionally farmed
land to certified organic production, and one system used
conventional inputs and management studies. Results shed
light on the process of converting high-input agricultural
systems to low external-input, sustainable systems, the
shifts in practices needed to make the conversion, and how
long the process will take. Suggests some indicators of the
sustainability of agricultural production systems. 15 pp.
