Use of diatomaceous earth as a vermifuge

A number of producers in this region (Quebec) are using diatomaceous earth
for worming their livestock and seem to find it effective. I have been
unable to locate much in the way of documentation to support the safety and
efficacy of this practice.
Is this use of DE common elsewhere? What dosages are normally used? Is
anyone aware of published studies looking at the internal use of DE by
animals or humans. Any information on this topic would be helpful.
Thanks,
