Here is an anecdote that is somewhat tangential, but may be of
interest to you. During the early 1970's I did some hitchhiking around
Eastern Canada. Once, while travelling around PEI (the home of "Bud the
Spud") I was given a ride by a couple from Long Island, NY. After some
introductory chit-chat, the husband asked me if I could show him a field
with potatoes growing in it. It turned out that he traded vast quantities
of potatoes on the commodities market as part of his job, but had never
seen them growing.
