On Friday Aug 4,1995 I had the opportunity to set up a tour for a
group of senior citizens visiting my area on a planned tour group
excersion. I was able to arrange a visit of a large local hatchery
for the group. However the group did not know that they were to go
to the hatchery (only that they were to take a tour of some
agricultural enterprise) until I was on the bus and we were
traveling down the highway. When learning of their destination the
majority of the group did not want to go as it was very hot outside
and they were not the least interested in seeing what they thought
was going to be a hen house full of brooding hens.
After seeing the facility the group expressed absolute amazement
in the simple technology of a very large scale incubator.
While it is not directly related to your question I think it does
demonstrate the lack of knowledge in the general population about
agriculture even when it concerns relatively simple technology.
