Jonathan Haskett's points are well taken regarding gardening and they
extroplate well into commercial production. It is possible to sue modern
farming technques such as four wheeled tractors and global positioning
satellites on large acerage to grow crops certified as organic. The same
with fruits as examples in california show. In fact, the ecnomys of scale
in may areas of the country opt for larger farms and many of these farmers
are caring, loving parents and children and very senstive to both the
biophysical and socio/economic factors. So indeed it may be more
environmentally and economically effective to give up the illusion that
back yard plots and small farms have sgilnficantly socially redeeming
values- any more than hunting ducks has any value other than to be out in
the great wonderful land of mother nature

This is not to say that such ideals can not be beneficial and effective
and can not be an option- but the romanicism for a past that never was and
a future that never will be is prmarily a metaphor for present concerns.
