Thanks so much for this posting. It is excellent, particularly
in view of the fact that we need more voices pointing out the
links between culture and agriculture. To add to what you have
already said, one of my favorite observations is to suggest
that people look at the origin of the word agriculture in the
Oxford English Dictionary. You have probably already done so,
but for others here is a summary. Agri derives from the latin
word for a unit or measure of land. Culture comes from
"colere" which means 1) to till the soil and 2) to worship with
honor. I can't think of anything which expresses the intrinsic
and necessary bond between agriculture and the rest of our
culture than this. For me it says it all. Hope this is of
interest to others.
