*Alternatives to Methyl Bromide: Ten Case Studies - Soil,
Commodity, and Structural Use, 1995.* U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, Office of Air and Radiation. Discusses ten
potential alternatives to methyl bromide which are products
or pest control methods that are now commercially available
or in advanced stages of development. Includes the following
alternatives for soil use: hot water technology, basamid for
tree nurseries, metam sodium for fruits and vegetables,
telone C-17 and tillam for market tomatoes, greenhouse
systems for tobacco seedling production, and Integrated Pest
Management for bare-root nurseries; commodity uses:
controlled atmospheres and systems approach; and structural
uses: combined phosphine, heat and carbon dioxide treatments
and temperature control.34 pp. Free. Bill Thomas, Methyl
Bromide Program, U.S. EPA-6205J, 401 M Street S.W.,
Washington, DC 20460; phone (202) 233-9179; fax (202) 233-

*Beyond Delaney: Preventing Exposure to Hazardous Pesticides,
1995.* Environmental Working Group.Argues that the Delaney
Clause should be broadened to reflect present scientific
understanding and to better protect public health by adopting
a new policy of prevention that reduces the number of highly
hazardous pesticides allowed in food. Authors recommend new
pesticide policies that will: focus on pesticide toxicity,
not on the calculation of risk to health; evaluate all
potential toxic effects of a pesticide including endocrine
disruption; and target the most potent and toxic pesticides
for phase-out within a reasonably short period of time. 18
pp. Free. Physicians for Social Responsibility, 1101 14th
Street, NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC 20005; phone (202) 898-
0150.

*Farmers For a Sustainable Future:The Leadership Role of
Agriculture, 1994.* International Federation of Agricultural
Producers (IFAP).Outlines environmental policy of IFAP
including identifying and implementing achievable solutions
for sustainable and environmentally-sound development such as
sustainable farming methods, secure land tenure, biodiversity
conservation, education and extension. Details the
collaboration of farmers worldwide with governments,
researchers, agro-industry and consumers.24 pp. Free.IFAP, 21

*Some Costs of Industrial Agriculture in New Zealand, 1995.*
Meriel Watts. Paper presented to the Food, Culture, Trade and
the Environment Conference in Korea, July 1995. Discusses
some of New Zealand's estimated environmental and human
health costs based on the negative externalities of pesticide
use. Highlights the debate over attempts to control New
Zealand's national pest, the opossum. 11 pp. Soil & Health
Association of New Zealand, PO Box 36-170, Northcote,
Auckland, New Zealand; phone (649)4438435; fax (649)4438436.

Reduction Policies for New Zealand, 1994.* Meriel Watts.
Explores the application of economic instruments such as the
"Polluter Pays Principle" to implement pesticide use
reduction in New Zealand.Evaluates criteria for assessing
whether or not economic instruments are appropriate for New
Zealand including policy compatibility, environmental
effectiveness, cost effectiveness, government acceptability,
and practical feasibility. 26 pp. Soil & Health Association
of New Zealand, PO Box 36-170, Northcote, Auckland, New
