Video Announcement

Dear Colleague:

I am pleased to announce the availability of the newly completed video of
the live satellite broadcast, Biological Control: Learning to Live with the
Natural Order. The purpose of this video is to introduce students to the
fascinating world of biological control.

The 25-minute video is geared towards elementary, middle, and high
school students. It sequentially describes the phases of a classical
biological control program against a serious agricultural pest, the Russian
wheat aphid. The video includes remarkable footage of natural enemies
in action provided by Walt Disney World Co.

We all benefit when children, and the adults they influence, learn more
about how we work together to develop and implement environmentally
friendly ways of managing pests. For that reason, I hope you will obtain,
share, and distribute the video. Free copies are available from NBCI.
Simply give us a call, send us a note, or place an order at the new 'NBCI
Store' on the World Wide Web (http://www.aphis.usda.gov/nbci/
nbci.html). Broadcast-quality tapes are also available should you know
of any local TV stations or educational channels that might be interested.

We're always interested in knowing what you think about our products
and services. Please provide us your feedback on the video.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Michael Oraze
Supervisory Biological Scientist

Video Review

This video review was published in the "Midwest Biological Control
News" by Dr. Susan Rice Mahr and Dr. Dan Mahr, Department of
Entomology, University of Wisconsin.

Biological Control: Learning to Live With the Natural Order is a 25 minute
videotape geared toward middle school children. Much of the video was
taken from a live LERN broadcast, originally transmitted to students
throughout the United States and Canada. It was produced by NBCI in
conjunction with USDA's Agricultural Research Service, Colorado State
University, and the Walt Disney World Co. Excellent photography
accompanies the narrative, with good close-ups of beneficials in action:
a lacewing larva eating an aphid; a predatory mite attacking a twospotted
spider mite; a tiny wasp "stinging" an aphid and another emerging from
the aphid mummy.

The feature story tells of current biological control efforts against the
Russian wheat aphid. The stage is set during a "spy" story of
international intrigue that should keep younger viewers interested, then
followed up with reports on natural enemy searches and a report card
on the program#s success.

Although the video targets kids, adults will also enjoy it.
