Farmland vs "natural land"

Recently, Ron suggested that our only two options for natural areas are
public ownership or for private land owner to set aside land. Why not
simply farm in a way that allows wildlife to survive, that fits into
functioning natural ecosystems rather than attempting to replace them?
Isn't that the direction that sustainable agriculture should be moving?
