We (WSU - Lorna Michael Butler, Dave Bezdicek, Scott Fidal, Drex Rhodes
[Drex and Scott are with WSU's Dept. of Information and have significant
experience creating sustainable agriculture videos] and myself) are
interested in submitting a proposal to USDA-CSREES's special call for
proposals for video materials on sustainable agriculture. Our proposal
would be to develop a set of training materials on PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH
AND EDUCATION methods using case studies to illustrate each method. In a
preliminary meeting last week, we identified the following as potential
methods and cases to highlight:

Focus Groups: Skagit Cropping Strategies and Water Quality Project, WSU, WA

Participatory On-Station Research: Comparison of Conventional, Low-Input and
Organic Organic Cropping Systems, UC Davis, CA

Community Networks and Participation in Water Quality Enhancement: NRCS

Community-Based Range Management: Navaho Sheep Project, NM & UT

We would also produce a video OVERVIEW OF THE CONCEPTS OF SUSTAINABILITY,
facilitator materials, and learner materials. We were thinking all the
video and written materials could be packaged much like the "Going Global"
international marketing materials available through WSU Bulletin's office
(three ring binder containing videos and written materials which them could
be photocopied by users).

In disseminating the training materials, we propose to conduct a national
satellite teleconference to introduce them and how they might be used.
Copies of the training materials would then be distributed to each state
sustainable agriculture extension coordinators, regional extension
coordinators and selected training partners, e.g. NRCS, NGOs, etc.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND ORGANIZATIONs INTERESTED IN
PARTNERING/COLLABORATING WITH US ON THIS PROPOSAL.

We would also like to know if other states in the Western Region are
considering submitting a proposal.

Our time line is short. Proposals are due by August 31, 1995.

If you are interested in collaborating with us or know of potential
collaborators, please contact me ASAP -- preferable before Monday, August 14.

Thank you!!!
