Dear Mr. Duncan,
It saddens me that the point of your message seemed to be " go
out and farm or shut up". Your invaluable perspective as a person
who grew up on a farm and currently works with farmers can only add
to all of our attempts to
understand the food system better, but is it realistic (or desired)
to limit those who comment on and work at improving the situation to
only farmers? My impression of the farmers I have known is that they
are pretty busy, and not all of them want to be activists. Many
people are affected by the decisions farmers make: consumers,
neighbors, food processors and marketors, everyone actually. What is
so terrible about all of us who are concerned about our food system
engaging in discussion, debate, and action? I am one elitist non-
farmer, with no pretensions to becoming a farmer, who wants to know
what farmers feel/want/need/experience in order to add to my own
perspective as a participant in the food system. Thank you for
sharing your opinion, and spurring me to share mine.
