*Environmental Risks of Genetically Engineered Organisms
and Key Regulatory Issues, 1995.* Dr. Peter Kareiva and
Dr. Ingrid Parker. Examines the direct ecological risks,
rather than risks to human health or indirect risks to
agricultural production, that may arise from release of
genetically engineered organisms. Finds that some
genetically engineered organisms carry substantial
threats and recommends that evaluations of safety be
made on a case-by-case basis. Argues that containment of
transgenes is impractical on the level of large-scale
commercial production, discusses ramifications of
transgene invasiveness and says that close regulation of
transgene application is scientifically justified. 15
pp. No charge. Greenpeace Switzerland, P.O. Box 276,
8026 Zurich, Switzerland; phone (41-1) 295 94 94; fax
(41-1) 241 38 21.

of international trade agreements on cotton production.
