The spill was a result of the lagoon bursting due to
heavy rains and a weakened area in the dike due to
some recent modifications. I think something like
25 million gallons of waste escaped and fouled the
New River above Jacksonville NC. It pretty much
killed everything in that stretch of the river.

Soon after this spill there were two more of lesser
magnitude. One from a hog operation and one from
a poultry farm.

The Raleigh News and Observer has been covering these
extensively. Their WWW server is http://www.nando.net.
On this server is a five part series they did recently
on hog farms in NC.
