I'm posting this to the Net on behalf of the Centro 16 de Septiembre,
a nonprofit, community-based, member-owned and -operated organic farm
in South Texas formed by UFW members in 1989. They seek to create
markets for organic produce and empower growers to run their own
organic farms. If you are interested, please reply to them directly.
Their organic cooperative farm is seeking to fill two positions:
Farm Director: oversees farm operations, conducts member trainings
and farm planning, works with employees and co-op membership, monitor
disease and pest activity, recommend and implement preventative
controls, maintain farm equipment, provide technical assistance and
develop/carry out training program in all areas of crop production,
marketing, and farm management, empower co-op members to operate
their own organic farms, work with executive director, coordinator,
members to create farm plans, conduct long fange planning, create and
implement record keeping systems,
Farm Coordinator: marketing, administrative tasks, and cooperative
development; establish markets and increase demand for organic
produce through consumer education efforts, establish prices for
co-op products, ensure market standards are met, coordinate produce
transportation, handle customer communications, work with financial
and administrative staff, conduct reporting functions, manage program
budget, monitor member participation.
Both positions require a strong commitment to peace, justice, and
community empowerment and a desire to work hard on behalf of farm
workers and other low-income Latinos. Both positions require
candidates to be bilingual (Spanish/English). Both offer
$10,400/year negotiable, and benefits include housing, health
insurance, and use of co-op vehicle. Note that the average annual
income for the farm worker families in this area is $6,500 for a
family of five.
For more information, contact Centro 16 de Septiembre, P.O. Box 27,
San Juan, TX 78589; fax (210) 702-3309; or phone Andy McDonald at

Please don't reply directly to me because I can't tell you anything
other than where to call, above.
Peace
Michele
