Busy Times: Farmbill

Things are cooking up here on Capitol Hill. Hearings going on both
sides. Commodity programs in Senate; ag trade in House. The nut
crunching decisions on the budget are being made. Ag cuts likely to
trend higher, to or about $11-12 billion over 5 years if House prevails
on a tax cut, which seems likely. Ag groups urging Congress to take most
of the cuts from food stamps; not so good for the long-standing coalition
between farm groups and advocates for the poor. But then these are
unusual times.
