Dear SANetters:

In response to my query on the directory of NGOs, I received a few messages
from several people. I sincerely thank each of the contributors. I have
attempted to compile (by copying relevant portions of different replies)
a list, which may be useful to others. I am sorry to post this long
message but I hope it would be useful at least to some people. Please
contact the sources directly, if you need further informnation.

1. Please contact Ralph Montee at the Center for PVO/ University
Collaboration at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North
Carolina. Their address is pvouc@wcuvax1.wcu.edu. They coordinate the
Sustainable Ag, Natural Resource Environmental Management Collaobration
under the aegis of USAID, (SANREM CRSP). Also ATTRA has a directory for

D. The Nature Directory: A Guide to Environmental Organizations. By Susan
Lanier-Graham. New York, Walker Publishing Company, 1991. 190 p.
Descriptions of 120 environmental organizations in the United States
working to stem the destruction of the environment and seek a better
balance with nature.
E. Organic Agriculture Worldwide. Directory of the Member Organizations and
Corporate Associates of IFOAM (International Federation of Organic
Agriculture Movements). Published about every 2 years. Tholey-Theley
(Germany), IFOAM.
International directory of over 500 member organizations and corporate
associates involved in teaching, research, or activities in organic
agriculture.

3. A publication which was found most useful by Michael Porch is
InterAction Member Profiles, which is
"...the collective contribution of nearly 150 Private Voluntary
Organizations (PVOs) as well as the unique qualities and distinction
of each member organization. ...names of top personnel, where and
how to contact them, the agency's philosophy and objectives, the
countries where it works, the programs it sponsors, the name of
its publications and the size of its budget."
"The Interaction members are a select group. To become a member of
Interaction, an agency must demonstrate a high level of commitment to
humanitarian principles and be voted in by its peers. Members must also
meet rigorous ethical standards covering such issues as governance,
organizational integrity, finances, managemant practices and
communication with the public."

4. There are a lot of organizations which have international lists of parties
engaged in various aspects of sustainable agriculture. For example, IFOAM
as an organic clearing house has lists; International Alliance for
Sustainable Agriculture has lists and has compiled a directory as do
organic certifying orgnaizations around the world.

Your best bet on getting the most complete information is to contact David
Katz at AgAccess in Davis California agaccess@igc.org. They have their
hands on the best international information. In addition to being one of
the best sources for published materials, internationally, in agriculture,
they have the best search staff for getting what you need on a fee for
service basis.

7. I had recently seen a direcctory of voluntory organisations published by
the Friends of the trees society from US. They give addresses of
organizations working in many areas, sustainable agriculture being one.
This is not an exhaustive and exclusive list. In India, a publication
called Directory of green farming publised by the Center for Science and
Environment.(deals only with Indian farming) Also the book called
"ecological visions" carries an appendix giving details of Indian sust.
ag. IFOAM news letter also carried some information.

8. The World Sustaingale Agriculture Association works extensively
with NGOs in the area of sustainable agriculture. We prepared a
136 page document for the UN Commision on Sustainable Development,
describing many of the NGO efforts. We would be happy to share our
information with you. I am now preparing a publication, "Yearbook
of World Sustainable Agriculture." It will build on our CSD report

10. The Global Action and Information Network (GAIN)announces several
regional environmental directories. The 1995/96 Great Lakes Environmental
Directory (566-page, US$25) (includes 3177 organizations in Illinois,
Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the province of Ontario)
joins the Harbinger File 1994/95 (365-page, $18.50, including 1560
organizations in California), the 1994/95 Rocky Mountain Environmental
Directory (includes more than 1840 listings in a 427-page soft cover book
covering Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah, for $20), and the
1995/96 New England Environmental Directory (lists over 830 organizations in
Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont,
for $15). A Southeast regional directory is currently in progress and will
be available in mid-1995; other regional directories will be created soon.
