KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Rodale Institute's Regenerative Agriculture
Research Center in Senegal was recently honored by the International
Center for the African Cause (CICA) for its work with farmers
throughout the country.

The CICA annually awards eight prizes to individuals and
organizations who have made significant contributions to African
development. More than 2,500 organizations were initially considered
for the 1994 awards. A preselection committee narrowed the number to
119 candidates.

Rodale's Senegal RARC received the highest honor in the category of
Development Assistance. Other categories judged by CICA officials
included Humanitarian Aid, Economics, Science, Culture, Politics,
Environment and Special Mention. Project director, Dr. Amadou Diop,
accepted the award for Rodale at a special dinner in Montreal.

Rodale's Senegal RARC, staffed by eight research and extension
specialists, began in 1988 and has served more than 10,000 farmers
and technicians in West Africa, promoting composting and other
regenerative agriculture techniques that improve soil quality and the
economic viability of village farms. The goal of the Senegal RARC is
to increase rural communities' food sufficiency and decrease
dependence on purchased (chemical) inputs for food production. In
1996, the Senegal RARC will be legally recognized as a
non-governmental organization (NGO).
