"wonder weed"

A farmer I was talking with here in Nebraska expressed interest
in a plant that was featured on a CNN show entitled "Earth Matters."
This plant has a myriad of uses, including rope-quality fiber
(sounded a lot like Cannabis to me, but the farmer said it wasn't).
If anyone saw this show and knows what species this "wonder weed"
is, I'd like to know!
