Many persons responded to my request for help in accessing the USGS
geographic names database. Following are the primary gopher and web methods
that I received. I have not posted duplications, so if you sent me information
and do not see your specific string of code here please do not be offended.
As it turns out, many gopher sites have the USGS data base as part of their
offerings list.
1. gopher.peabody.yale.edu:71/1
2. to search by city or zopcode:
gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu:4324/1geo
3. http://info.er.usgs.gov/fdgc-catalog/products/Geographic_Names_Information_
System_(GNIS).html
4.http://info.er.usgs.gov/data/index.html
5.finder: http://lycos.cs.cmu.edu/
6. telnet: martini.eecs.umich.edu/port=3000
There are no guarantees. I have had the best luck going through the Yale
Library and the USGS homepage. The others work but apparently
better for some than for others.
