Cascadian Farm, a leading organic farming, food processing
and marketing company has an opening for an associate field
rep beginning Spring '95. This is a full time, salaried
position, although part-time or seasonal options may be con-
sidered. Duties may include:
Serve as liaison with contract growers and processors
on all matters involved with production of crops contracted by
Cascadian Farm.
Recruit new growers as needed for future expansion and
new product introductions.
Assist growers with securing organic certification,
devising ideal crop rotations, organic soil fertility plans,
pest management and weed control strategies. Monitor crops
through the growing season and advise growers on planting,
cultivation, irrigation, pest control measures, etc.
Measure and map fields, calculate plant populations,
estimate yields and maturity dates.
Design and conduct on-farm R&D trials and test plots to
develop and improve reliable and profitable organic management
techniques. Evaluate alternative tillage, fertilizer treatments,
green manure cropping, cultivation methods, flame weeding, cultural
and biological pest control methods.
Oversee and assist in harvest and delivery to processors.
Assist in writing grower guides, newsletters, reports and
sample enterprise budgets. Participate in symposia, associations, etc.
Applicants should have a BS level education in an ag science with a
strong and motivating interest in organic/sustainable farm systems,
experience in the processed vegetable/fruit industry, and good verbal
and written communication skills. Experience and insight may sub-
stitute for college degree. Considerable regional travel will
be required.
