*Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development: Part 1-Latin
America and Asia.* Food and Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations, (FAO). This issue of D.E.E.P. (Development
Education Exchange Papers) promotes the exchange of ideas and
information between FAO and NGOs interested in working
together on Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development
(SARD) projects in Latin America. Describes field programs
carried out by various NGOs and FAO-funded programs
including: Centro de Educacion y Tecnologia (CET) in Chile
implements an agroecological production system; Centro de
Investigacion, Educacion y Desarrollo (CIED) in Peru extends
the agricultural frontier by rehabilitating its network of

integrated farming methods; and People's Education and

Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research,

*Improving the Transfer and Use of Agricultural Information,
1994.* Willem Zijp. World Bank discussion paper recommends
more investment should be made in information technology
applications for agricultural development in developing
countries to redress the growing imbalance in information,
reduce poverty, increase participation, improve governance,
manage natural resources and improve opportunities for women.
The information technology referred to is computer-based
technology and telecommunications, including CD-ROM, computer
networks, desktop publishing, expert systems, geographic
information systems, interactive video, packet radio, radio
and interactive radio, satellite communications, and linear
