The most likely source of information on this topic is Educational
Concerns for Hunger Organization (ECHO) in Florida (sorry I don't
have the complete address here at home--call me during the day at
1-800-346-9140 if you want to follow this up). ECHO sponsors
rooftop and urban gardens for people of very limited means in
Latin America.

A number of years ago some friends who had worked in Nicaragua and
El Salvador, respectively, gave slide presentations on communal
gardening there. The garden in El Salvador was worked by people
in a refugee camp and provided food for the camp; the other
garden was a demo to show that broccoli and cabbage can grow
in Central America. A problem was that a)local men didn't
think gardening was "machismo" and b) they didn't like either
broccoli or cabbage.
