GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP

On-Farm Composting and Vermiculture of Fish Manure and
Mortalities for Aquaculture Farms

Position Description:

The University of Idaho Agricultural Engineering Department
has graduate research assistant position available for a
research project concerning composting of fish manure and
fish mortalities. The research assistant will help design
and conduct laboratory experiments with the following
objects: (1) determine the composting characteristics of
fish manure; (2) develop recipes for amending fish manure
and mortalities with other suitable materials; and (3)
evaluate vermiculture (worm composting) as an option for
treating fish manure. The research assistant will also
assist in establishing and collecting data from field-scale
experiments on participating aquaculture farms. The field-
scale experiments will evaluate methods and handling
procedures for on-farm composting and vermicomposting of
fish manure and fish mortalities. The position is for two
years, with the possibility of an extension.

Qualifications:

B.S. or M.S. in agricultural, biological, environmental, or
equivalent engineering discipline. Candidates with an
aquaculture or environmental science background will also
be considered. A strong interest in aquaculture or waste
management is desired.

Stipend:

$10,000 to $11,000 per year
