SCOPE OF WORLD FOOD DAY

Worldwide observance of founding of UN Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO) (Meetings that led
to founding of FAO held during World War II at Hot
Springs, Virginia in 1943; FAO Interim Commission
met in Washington, and the first headquarters was
in Washington.)

Governmental support at every level, every year:

Presidential proclamation
Congressional Resolutions
President's World Food Day Report to Congress
All governors, every year, have proclaimed
World Food Day
Mayors use World Food Day for Awards

Sponsorship by 450 non-governmental organizations in
the U.S.

Observances in every community of the nation

1,000 teleconference sites at colleges and embassies
throughout hemisphere

Examples of special events set to coincide with
World Food Day:

Awarding of World Food Prize ($200,000)

National Food Bank Week

Release of major report by Bread for the World

Community fundraising events held nationwide

Peace with Justice Week

Children's Sabbaths - sponsored by Children's
Defense Fund

National UNICEF Month - sponsored by U.S. Committee
for UNICEF

Thousands of observances in day care centers,
elementary and high schools

Millions of pounds of food collected at stores,
concerts, festivals, churches, etc.

Business and corporate involvement

In sum, World Food Day in the U.S. is a marvelously, multi-
dimensional event each October 16th that gives focus and impetus
to year-around concern and action.

It is an incredibly useful tool that the people of our country
are using and it is a gift waiting to be accepted and used by
public officials wishing to acknowledge this massive collective
volunteer effort and demonstrate matching enthusiasm and
commitment.
