Subj: Sign On to the Campaign for Sustainable Ag. Sorry for any
duplication.
The national grassroots-driven Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture is
gaining momentum, with a mid-October media kickoff date anticipated. The
campaign is currently circulating a "sign-on" letter, which organizations
can sign to indicate their support for the goals of the campaign, and which
will be used to show Congress and the media the diverse interests who want
to see federal agriculture policy begin to support farmers, consumers and
the environment instead of agribusiness and chemical companies.
If your organization agrees with the principles of this campaign, please
join the list, which already includes many local, state and national
groups, ranging from the National Farmers Union to the Sierra Club
Agriculture Committee to Texas Sustainable Food Center to the Peace and
Justice Council of the Catholic Diocese of Lexington, KY. You may either
print out the sign-on letter and mail it to Julie Burns, 4 Lindsey Rd.,
Asheville, NC 28805 OR send your response electronically to hn3897.
Requests for info or any questions to same addresses or call (704)
299-1922.
Following is the text of the sign-on letter:
"The Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture is a bold effort to reform
agriculture policy by forging an unprecendented alliance among family farm,
environmental, rural community, consumer, farmworker, animal protection,
wildlife protection, religious, and social justice organizations.
"Campaign participants are working to accomplish the following goals in the
1995 Farm Bill:
* Reform farm programs to foster family farms and environmental
stewardship.
* Strengthen conservation programs and encourage whole farm planning.
* Redirect research and extension programs to promote sustainable farming
systems.
* Promote access to farm ownership for minority and beginning farmers.
* Improve conditions and fair pay for farmworkers.
* Encourage humane treatment of farm animals.
* Strengthen rural communities, and support new cooperative, local
marketing and new processing endeavors.
* Provide a safe and abundant food supply.
"The undersigned organization supports the broad goals of the Campaign for
Sustainable Agriculture and would like to be listed as a participant in the
Campaign. We understand that this does not require endorsing or working on
all of the issues in the Campaign, and that we are free to focus on the
issues of greatest concern to our organization.
