The Economic Research Service of USDA in Washington, DC., is
pleased to announce a new service.
STATE FACTS SHEETS IN ELECTRONIC FORMAT
Our STATE FACTS BY FAX were a big hit last March. However, many
people requested that we put the FACTS into some kind of electronic
format so the numbers could be picked up from Internet or Bitnet.
We now have that. Each state now has an electronic data file
containing the same numbers as our STATE FAX SHEETS. Our Internet and
Bitnet customers can pick up the electronic files with the old fashion
GET <filename> command, sent to: LISTSERV@ERS.BITNET
For example, to receive the electronic data file on Virginia, send
E-Mail to:
LISTSERV@ERS.BITNET
In the body of the note, type on a single line:
GET VA DATA
Use the two-letter state abreviation and the word, DATA, to pick up the
state that you want. You may use the following abreviations and file
names to pick up the state file that you want.

We are testing this service now before we update our numbers. Several
sections of our STATE FACTS SHEETS are close to being updated. We
wanted to get the electronic data files on-line and working before
we introduce our new numbers. Please feel free to request these
files electronically through E-Mail and report any problems to us.

Some of you may be wondering if ERS has an FTP site or gopher site.
We are testing these facilities. They should be ready soon. But,
for now, you can pick up these files through our Bitnet LISTSERV.
Below, I have a reprint of the notice that I sent out last March about
our STATE FACTS BY FAX. When our numbers are updated, the FACTS BY
FAX and the electonic data files will be updated together.

STATE FACTS BY FAX
Please call 202-219-1107 and ask for document 411 and 5500.
Our agency has compiled some of the most frequently asked farm and
rural data for each state in the US and put them into an easy to use
retrieve AutoFAX machine. These fact sheets include numbers on
population, jobs and employment, poverty, land area, farm income
and balance data and commodity information, neatly assembled into a
2-page fact sheet for each state. We will be updating our database
and Facts Sheets as new information become available.
Our State Facts data come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the
Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Bureau of Census and from our own
Farm Sector Financial Analysis Branch in ERS.
We hope you find these State Fact Sheets helpful and easy to
obtain. Below is a list of the individual states and their FAX doc.
