Here is an announcement that will be of general interest
to graduate students in a number of areas related to
sustainable development.

John Henning, McGill U.

====================================

We are pleased to announce the creation of the Canadian Policy
Research Awards Graduate Prizes. The Graduate Prizes were
created in collaboration with the Canadian Institutes of Health
Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council
and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. The
purpose of these awards is to recognize the excellent work done
by young people doing research that has policy implications as
well as those studying Canadian policy development. At a time of
increasing public discussion of issues such as bio-medical ethics,
computer technology, global warming and poverty - to name just a
few - the need for sound research in public policy is greater than
ever.

We urge you to encourage appropriate graduate and post-doctoral
students to compete for these awards. Applicants' research will be
adjudicated by an independent, multidisciplinary, multisectoral
committee for the quality of the research and the authors'
sensitivity to potential policy implications. THE DEADLINE FOR
NOMINATIONS IS SEPTEMBER 15, 2000. Information about the
nomination procedure can be found at our Website -
www.policyrecherche.gc.ca or by contacting us at (613) 947-1956.

Up to 10 prizes will be awarded. Winners will participate in a
seminar in Ottawa from November 24 to 29, 2000 with some of the
country's most distinguished researchers and leading policy-
makers. In addition, they will be our guests at the third annual
National Policy Research Conference from November 30 to
December 1. Prizes will be awarded at the second annual
Canadian Policy Research Awards Dinner on November 30.

We look forward to receiving applications from your graduate
students.
