TAPROOT SEMINAR ON
PARTNERSHIPS AMONG LAND GRANTS AND NON-PROFITS

October 29 through November 2, 2000
Glynwood Center, New York*

TAPROOT is an intensive learning opportunity for people involved in
social change. The seminar will challenge you to reach new levels of
awareness about yourself and the system in which you live and work. It
will provide exposure to cutting-edge tools and strategies for catalyzing
change.

GLYNWOOD CENTER

Glynwood Center is dedicated to advancing the field of community
stewardship. Located in the Hudson Highlands, one hour north of New York
City, the Center has a modern conference facility set amidst magnificent
gardens and a working farm, surrounded by thousands of acres of
woodlands, hills and streams. For more see www.glynwood.org.

WHO SHOULD COME?

Seminar participants will come in teams of 3-4 people from each of 6-7
states. Teams should include 1-2 people from a Land Grant University
(perhaps an administrator or specialist and an agent) and 1-2 people from
a nonprofit (perhaps a farmer board member and a senior staff person).
Each team of LGU and NGO representatives should have a history or at
least an intention of working together toward common goals.

WHY IT'S UNIQUE . . .

The seminar will blend exploration of effective strategies with awareness
of how your inner world drives your work in the outer world.

PARTICIPANTS WILL . . .

1) Increase individual and team capacity to lead change through sessions
on leadership, group development, mental models, scenario planning, and
systems thinking;
2) Reflect on shifts in agriculture that require adaptation from both
land grant universities and nonprofits; and
3) Help create strategies and tactics to improve the working partnerships
between land grant universities and nonprofits.

IF ANY OF THESE QUESTIONS RESONATE, THIS IS A SEMINAR FOR YOU.

Are you working on issues that involve people with differing interests,
values, and perspectives?
Do you feel locked into a system that won’t change fast enough?
Do you sometimes feel "stuck" trying harder doing what you're already
doing? Would you welcome an opportunity to step back and reflect on
where you've been and where you want to go?
Are you willing to confront those aspects of yourself that get in the way
of leading change?

WHO IS OFFERING THIS OPPORTUNITY?

The Learning Communities Project sponsors this seminar in partnership
with the Consortium for Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education.
The core facilitators of TAPROOT are the Learning Communities Project
(LCP) team of Carol Anderson, Hal Hamilton, Mark Ritchie, Barbara
Rusmore, and Vicki Van Zee. John Gerber and Curtis Absher have helped
with initiation of the seminar.

TESTIMONIALS FROM PARTICIPANTS IN PREVIOUS TAPROOT SEMINARS

TAPROOT was the best leadership workshop I have ever attended.

Mapping the system helps me see much more clearly where I am and what my
possibilities are.

The seminar revealed relationship building as a blind spot for me. I
haven't built communication and trust in leadership. I got tools for
creation of learning communities, tools for resolving conflict, and
feedback skills.

All the tools gave me a sense I could lead and that leadership comes in
many forms. Leadership isn't just extraordinary people, but recognizing
your ability to lead is a root to change. .

I learned different ways to step outside my project and see with a
different eye.

The assumptions exercise helped me look at and draw out others’
viewpoints. Mental models made me more aware of my own model and how to
turn this to advantage in leadership roles.

LOGISTICS

Participants will be asked to cover individual cash costs of food,
lodging, and transportation, which are estimated for the 5-day session to
be $750 plus airfare. Scholarships are available for some participants,
and all CSARE members will receive a $100 scholarship. The Learning
Communities Project will cover the balance of seminar costs, including
faculty, logistics, administration and follow-up support.
