BLUE PLANET PRIZE OF $450,000 AWARDED TO DR. THEO COLBORN
WASHINGTON, DC, June 14, 2000 (ENS) - World Wildlife Fund (WWF) senior
scientist Dr. Theo Colborn has been named this year's winner of the
prestigious Blue Planet Prize for her original work on the effects of
prenatal exposure to chemicals in humans and wildlife. Established by
Japan's Asahi Glass Foundatioin at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro,
the Blue Planet Prize recognizes outstanding scientific contributioins to
global environmental conservation. Dr. Colborn will receive the award
October 26 in Tokyo. Dr. Colborn is co-author with Dr. John Peterson Myers
and Dianne Dumanoski of the 1996 book "Our Stolen Future." It details the
scientific evidence that shows how common synthetic chemicals humans and
wildlife encounter daily can interfere with naturally produced hormones and
cause developmental and reproductive abnormalities.
The book has now been translated into more than a dozen languages including
Japanese. The public outcray that followed the book's release in Japan has
resulted in new legislation and an increase in public awareness of the
dangers of chemical contamination. "I am deeply humbled and very honored to
be the recipient of the Blue Planet Award," Dr. Colborn said. "I also
rejoice because it provides an opportunity to reach vast audiences
worldwide with the message that man-made chemicals can alter the destiny of
those who are exposed in the womb or the egg before birth." Dr. Colborn has
appealed for global regulation of these hazardous substances.
