The Northeast Agricultural
Development Symposium
Land, People and Profits: Integrating Agriculture, Communities and Economic
Development

November 9-10, 2000
Best Western Albany Airport Inn
Albany, New York

The Northeast Agricultural Development Symposium is the culmination of a
two-year, USDA SARE -funded project to strengthen agricultural economic
development initiatives and train agricultural development practitioners in the
region. The Symposium will provide a forum for Project results and for
region-wide networking and professional development. Speakers include, Nathan
Rudgers, Commissioner, NY Department of Agriculture and Markets, Philip
Gottwals, agricultural development consultant. In addition, 16 workshops will
address topics such as:
· Integrating Agriculture and Economic Development
· Farm Viability Enhancement: Model State Programs
· Farmers Markets vs. Public Markets: Return on Public Investments
· Farmland Protection and Agricultural Development
· Financing Agricultural Enterprises
· The Role of Agriculture in Smart Growth
· Agricultural Development for Under-served Populations

Who should attend: Agricultural development professionals, community and
economic development specialists, planners, extension staff, state departments
of agriculture, USDA staff, non-governmental organizations, policy makers, food
and farm organizations, and interested individuals from throughout the
Northeast and beyond are invited to attend.

Registration Cost: $90, includes materials and four meals; scholarships
available.

Call for Co-sponsors and Exhibitors: Co-sponsorship entails commitment to send
one or more staff people to the Symposium and to assist with outreach. Exhibits
(@ $25/table; ask about our sliding scale) will be on display throughout the
event.

The Northeast Training and Support Network for Agricultural Development (NETSN)
is coordinated by Kathy Ruhf, Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Group
and Tom Lyson, Farming Alternatives Program, Cornell University, and is funded
by the USDA Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program.
The project is a collaborative effort of twenty-seven agricultural economic
development specialists from land grant universities, State departments of
agriculture, planning and economic development agencies, and the private sector
to strengthen community and regional infrastructure for agricultural
development.
