Dear All--
Angelic Organics needs a cook!! Angelic Organics is a CSA that serves
about 850 families in the Chicago area. We have a crew of about 10-12
people that work and live on the farm, but we are missing one essential
team member -- a cook / manager of residential life. The support that
the cook / residential manager brings to the farm team rejuvenates our
energy to do the farm work and strengthens our farm community. This is
an opportunity for people who want to have a connection to a farm and to
the natural ebb and flow of the seasons and the seasons' produce. It's
an opportunity to artistically create meals and an environment of
nourishment and inspiration. And it's an opportunity to get to know your
present and future farmers. If you or anyone you know is interested in
this position, please read the description and application instructions
below and respond by e-mail mailto:CSA@AngelicOrganics.com or phone
815-389-2746.

** Cook & Manager of Residential Life **
Job Description and Application Instructions
** Job Overview **
This is a managerial and support position, in service to the larger
swirl of farm work. However, the kitchen and residential spaces are at
the heart of everything we do. The kitchen table offers the ultimate
celebration of the energy and care we give the land, and the gifts it
gives in return. The residential spaces are places for us to rejuvenate
our energy to do the farm work and strengthen the farm community.
As the cook: Your cooking will encompass both the utilitarian need
for nourishment and the emotional need for food celebration. We
encourage you to approach your role here as a food artist, bringing
creativity to your preparation of our splendid seasonal produce.
As the residential manager: You will foster a warm, welcoming and
creative environment for the workers & visitors and facilitate the
cleanliness and organization of shared spaces (kitchen, laundry room,
etc.).
** Job Specifics **
This is a 7 month position, from April-October.
Apply even if you are available only for part of this period. We
prioritize those who are available for the entire period.
Work day is roughly 7am to 5pm
5 days a week (Monday through Friday)
Cook Responsibilities:
Prepare meals for 10 to 15 people, including yourself
Breakfast is served approx. 2 hrs after the fieldwork begins
Lunch is served from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Vegetarian dishes, possibly with dairy & non-dairy choices
(depending on group eating preferences)
Create weekly menus, and post for the farm crew
Clean up after meals
Additional kitchen cleanings on a weekly basis
Gather produce from the fields or coolers
Coordinate monthly food orders from North Farm Coop
Purchase additional groceries on a weekly basis
Track expenses and work within the kitchen budget
Residential Manager Responsibilities:
Welcome and orient new staff and visitors to the kitchen and
residential spaces and general procedures
Maintain calendars & supplies for cleaning rotations of common
spaces
Ensure that resident needs & requests are handled by the
appropriate person
Coordinate close down of residential spaces at the end of the year
Inspire and assist with communal social activities and gathering
information about local events
** Your Eating Audience **
Your eating audience is an appreciative and hungry bunch.
As the caretaker of the vegetables youll be working with, were
especially keen on dishes that artfully showcase exquisite flavors and
freshness.
We are receptive to (and hoping for) a variety of different cooking
styles ranging from light to heavy, healthy to decadent, mild to spicy,
Midwestern to mid-eastern and everything in between. Flavors from
Indian, Thai and Mexican cuisine are special favorites here.
Interest or experience in food preparation that takes into account
Ayurvedic and/or Anthroposophical/Biodynamic concepts is a plus. (We
find Rudolf Steiners book On Nutrition and Stimulants especially
compelling. Another recommended resource in the Biodynamic vein is
Louises Leaves.)
** Kitchen Give & Take **
The kitchen will protect you from the harshest weather dramas and crop
crises. You dont have to deal with the daily curveballs that Nature
throws at the rest of us. But as an important part of our farm team, you
will inevitably be exposed to some of these challenges, and will be
asked to play a role in supporting us through them. We may ask you to be
patient if the interns occasionally come in a half-hour late (after your
beautiful souffle has settled into an omelette) because they were
rushing to finish planting before a storm. We may ask you, on short
notice, for an extra-big lunch because last minute guests are soon
arriving. The important thing to remember is that we are a team, working
together to produce beautiful, nutritious vegetables and your role on
the farm is vital and greatly appreciated.
** Application Instructions **
If you are interested in pursuing a position as Cook/Residential Manager
at Angelic Organics, please go to our web site:
http://www.angelicorganics.com/intern/cinstructions.html and fill out
the application in the intern handbook for the cook (this is an old
application that we are working on updating, but until we do, please use
this one).
** Interview **
Can you visit the farm to meet us, and perhaps audition your cooking??
We understand this might not be practical, but if it can be arranged,
please indicate on your application when you could visit.
** Compensation **
We offer the cook/residential manager between $600 to $800 a month plus
room and board (pay is commensurate with experience). If you are coming
from the local area and will be commuting to the farm, please contact us
to discuss an hourly wage instead of the monthly stipend.
