Re: a place for RoundUp in a sustainable farm?

As an extension agent, I wanted to reply to the comment made below that
"...MOST extension programs require the use of Roundup to participate." I am
not aware of any programs in NC Cooperative Extension "requiring" the use of
Roundup. If there are, I sure would like someone to point out specifics. Yes,
some farmers use Roundup in NC. Some grow Roundup-ready varieties. Some
don't. Some farmers also use other pesticides. Some farmers may not use
Roundup and/or other pesticides. As an IPM Agent, I try to inform farmers of
the many options they have for weed management - including tillage systems
(cultivation, strip till, no till), rotation, encouraging vigorous crop growth,
plant spacing, planting date, etc. (even flame weeding, steam weeding, and
hand weeding.)
I am not debating the use or non-use of Roundup here - just questioning the
(MIS)perception that Extension programs require the use of Roundup. That is
sure not true in my experience (as a client and as an agent) with Extension in
North Carolina.
