Sustainable tobacco

A few years back in Wisconsin I inspected (for organic certification) a
diversified dairy farm including a 6-acre tobacco allotment. Crop
rotation receives a *lot* of attention in my inspections, and so with
the tobacco, I asked the grower, "What did you grow here last year?"
... "Tobacco." ... "The year before?" ..."Tobacco." ... "The year
before *that*?" ... "Tobacco."

Finally I asked the key question, "Just how long has this field been in
tobacco?" ... "Well, that I *know* about --- 104 years. Probably 10 or
15 more than that."

It was the best quality field on the farm, with the best soil structure
and texture, etc, etc. Certified organic. Starts to sound sustainable
to me.
