Redefining Progress is looking for an information systems manager with 1-2
years' experience and an interest in working for a nationally recognized,
respected, and vital nonprofit, nonpartisan sustainability policy
institute. We'll be moving to wonderful new offices in downtown Oakland in
July (one block from major mass transit), and we're also redesigning and
refreshing our identity materials. This person will play a key role in our
organization...and will learn a lot as well!

Information Systems Manager
Redefining Progress

The Information Systems Manager is responsible for all aspects of the
information systems infrastructure for this mid-size nonprofit public
policy organization. The IS manager will maintain desktop computers and
peripherals and expand our networking and Internet capabilities. Reporting
to the Managing Director and the Communications Director, the Information
Systems Manager will work with staff to address a wide variety of
technological issues, including software applications, database
streamlining, security protocols, and world wide web presence. This is a
key position in an innovative and respected organization with national impact.
Responsibilities include:
I. Maintain Workstations and Network
• configure new Windows 98 computer workstations as necessary;
• configure new hardware for the network, specifically: printers, fax
machines, routers, and other peripherals;
• maintain and install software and upgrades to the
workstations/network as necessary, specifically: Windows 98, Eudora, MS
Office, MS Outlook, MS Exchange, FileMaker Pro, Adobe Acrobat;
• maintain a small cluster of Macintosh desktops (2);
• resolve individual workstation and overall network problems;
• conduct regular data backups;
• research and recommend software/hardware solutions and provide
purchasing recommendations;
• generate and update computer system manuals for the Administration
Manual;
• serve as the liaison with Internet service provider, email
provider, and other external vendors;
• research and recommend project consultants as necessary.
II. Web Site Maintenance
• upload new content, documents, and changes as necessary (knowledge
of HTML, Java, and CGI);
• monitor Web site usage and access statistics;
• work with the Communications Director, Program Directors, and
external design team in modifications of site architecture and content.
III. Database
• streamline, update, and maintain extensive FileMaker Pro-based
database of research, development, and outreach contacts;
• develop and produce database reports, lists, and labels as needed;
• create templates for database;
• install database upgrades;
• train staff in database use.
IV. Technical Advising And Training
• serve as a contact person for the organization to answer general
computer questions;
• help to familiarize the Office Manager and other staff as necessary
with the current computer systems;
• facilitate staff training sessions (new software and/or systems) as
necessary.
V. E-Mail System Maintenance
• oversee and troubleshoot e-mail system;
• work with external provider to configure system and gateway
accounts as necessary.
Qualifications include:
BS/BA;
• 1-2 years exp. in computer system maintenance and support;
• working knowledge of Windows and Macintosh operating systems, MS
Office, FileMaker Pro, Adobe graphics applications, HTML, Java, CGI;
ability to train people who have varying levels of computer skills;
knowledge of nonprofit organizations;
interest in economic, environmental, and social justice issues.
