Jane and others:

According to the article, the pesticides in question are showing up "in"
the vegetables.

But get this quote:

"It's a sound precaution to thoroughly wash your produce and peel your root
crops," said Mary Jane Incorvia Mattina, a
scientist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station who led the study.

I expect the journalist is quoting the scientist out of context, but in any
case it adds up to a gratuitous non-sequitur. Chemicals that are taken up
INTO the plant will not be removed by washing or peeling.
