RESOURCES
*The USDA-ERS has an RFP for its Food Assistance and Nutrition Research
Program. Between $2 to 3 million will be disbursed for funding levels between
$100,000-400,000 total for up to 3 years. Proposals must fall under one of
four categories: Reaching Underserved Populations, Food Programs as Safety
Net and Client Well-Being, Child Nutrition, and Behavioral Nutrition. A
priority area is "Understanding the Causes and Consequences of Food
Insecurity." They will also suppport research projects "to develop
expertise by newly-graduated researchers or by senior researchers who are
new to food assistance and nutrition issues."

* "Growing a Community Food System" by Steven Garrett and Gail Feenstra.
This west-coast based publication outlines steps any community can take to
localize their food system. It describes how to establish strong
coalitions, and how to plan strategically. The authors outline key
components of the process including: visioning, assessment, development of
project concepts, evaluation, and planning. The authors discuss various
aspects of project implementation, including education, entrepreneurism,

* 6/1-3: ADVANCING COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY. Roanoke, VA
Interact with practitioners who have implemented sustainability projects in
their communities. The target audience includes state and local public
officials, business leaders, nonprofit organization managers, and citizen
activists. Conference will focus on exploring ways to adapt existing ideas
and
projects to other communities.
Plenary and roundtable sessions will examine the practice of
sustainability in each of three areas of community life:
(a) physical development (e.g.: infill, adaptive reuse, and sprawl
prevention),(b) infrastructure design (e.g.: alternative transit, waste
management, and energy systems), and (c) economic structure (e.g.:
industrial ecology, local economic resilience, and job creation).
