</bold>New Farmers/New Markets and Ethnic Markets

<bold>Description of Project:

</bold>New Farmers/New Markets is an educational and entrepreneurial
program which aims to help increase food security, generate job
opportunities and promote community-based agricultural development.
The Ethnic Market project aims to help urban ethnic food buyers gain
access to higher quality and fresher agricultural products from the
Northeast region

by fostering beneficial marketing relationships.

<bold>Responsibilities and Expectations:

</bold>The intern is responsible for working with multiple Community
groups throughout New York City to help start or strengthen community
farmers' markets. Specific duties include recruiting new farmers to
sell at the markets; encouraging community gardeners to sell their
products; publicizing the markets through newspaper ads, flyers, radio,
and signs at the market site; offering training when necessary on
market management, customer relations, stall appearance; occasionally
helping with planting, cultivating, and harvesting activities at
community gardens; attracting craft vendors to the markets; creating
promotional materials and logos; and attending meetings of the vendors'
associations or organizers at each market.

<bold>Suitable College Majors:

</bold>Extension education, agricultural economics, rural sociology,
horticulture, urban or regional planning, community development,
marketing, or related fields.

<bold>Background appropriate for the position:

</bold>Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to work
independently with minimal direction, ability to work with a diverse
range of people, creativity, computer literacy, willingness to work
some weekends and evenings, Spanish speaking a plus but not required.

Salary is commensurate with experience and start and end dates are
flexible.
