In the context of comparing the energy efficiency of various systems of
accomplishing some goal, it is necessary to account for all of the
energy in the system. Mass and energy balancing and budgets are
necessary to ensure that nothing important has been overlooked.

If you're not interested in energy efficiency, then you probably won't
care about full energy accounting either.
