Call for a Comprehensive Global Assessment of Costs,
Benefits and Future Directions of Irrigated Agriculture
The International Water Management Institute proposes
to open a broad dialogue among those for and against
irrigation. There is a major need to bridge the gap
between those that believe irrigation is crucial to
the world's food security and those that believe
irrigation is a major threat to the world's
environmental security.
Rather than producing definitive answers to the open
question How Much Irrigation Do We Really Need? This
proposal aims to open a dialogue between all
stakeholders, with the objective of highlighting
general concern, then identifying more specific
national, regional and local solutions, in countries
across the developing world.
