BRIEF QUOTATION:
Pacific Northwest Carbon Sequestration Coalition
The following article is excerpted from RC&D's Newsletter "Forests, Farms, and Fish," and is written
by Tim King, Coordinator for the Upper Columbia RC&D Council.
The key to global climate change lies in a simple natural process: The carbon cycle is the true
cycle of life, which in every form as we know it is based on carbon. The fact that we have
temporarily thrown the global carbon cycle out of balance suggests that we can also rebalance the
system by improving vegetation management and natural sequestration of atmospheric carbon through
photosynthesis. We have the ability to effect a safe, economical and timely return to pre-industrial
levels of atmospheric carbon, while at the same time boost world production of food and fiber,
improve environmental quality, and reduce the costs of agricultural and industrial production.
· Within forests we can increase carbon storage in the soils and biomass through reforestation and
improved forest management.
· Within crop lands we can increase carbon storage in the soils through improved management, leading
to higher yields with less chemical inputs.
· Within rangelands we can increase carbon storage in soils by controlling and improving grazing
management.
All land uses and vegetation management can help to rebalance the carbon cycle if we act in a
positive, proactive manner to sequester (or store) a ton of carbon for every ton added to the
atmosphere by human activities. It is estimated that we cause a net release approximately 7.3
billion tons of carbon through adverse land uses and fossil fuel use each year; existing natural
uptake in the oceans and on land yields a net decrease of only about 4 billion tons/year, a
difference of more than 3 billion tons. If we agreed offset all carbon emissions from fossil fuel
use and land use changes from this point forward, we would immediately begin to reverse course and
within 40 years return to pre-industrial carbon levels.
