Pasture Field Day May 13
Farmers and others interested in managing pastures to improve profits while
reducing labor, soil erosion and manure management problems are invited to
attend a field day Saturday, May 13, at the Dwight and Dan Truttmann dairy
farm near New Glarus, WI.
The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Truttmann farm on Green County
Hwy. J, one mile north of Wisconsin Hwy. 39. It is sponsored by Dane-Green
Graziers, a farmer group promoting managed grazing.
The Truttmanns milk 125 cows that graze up eight months each year on more
than 150 acres of managed pasture. They say that managed grazing has boosted
the farm's profitability and reduced labor enough to accommodate a doubling
of the herd over the past 10 years.
The field day will feature a demonstration of fencing materials and
techniques for managed grazing. Also planned is a tour of new milking and
cattle housing facilities, as well as a pasture walk that will concentrate
on grass and legume variety trials.
For more information, contact the Truttmanns at 608-527-2536, or
608-527-5089. To learn more about Dane-Green Graziers, contact Bert Paris,
Belleville, at 608-424-6396.
