Fourth annual conference of the Community Food Security Coalition

The Community Food Security Coalition seeks proposals for sessions at its
annual conference in Santa Fe, NM October 29-31.
Proposals should highlight presentations in specific areas in food, farming
and hunger or bring together diverse aspects of the food system to examine an
entire issue. We are looking for presentations on the following topics
(note--these are not tracks):
Local food policy and coalitions
National policy related to food security
2. Agriculture and Rural-Urban issues
Community food security in rural areas
Direct marketing (farmers' markets, CSA, etc.)
Global food system trends and impacts on local communities
3. Youth and communities
Community Food Project lessons/issues/barriers
Community participation in project design and implementation
Food access, supermarkets, transportation in low income communities
Food and schools
Food security/ food systems assessments
Food-related Community (economic) development
Urban agriculture especially in low income communities
Youth food production/processing
4. Concepts and Constituencies
Community food systems/local food systems/foodsheds
Conceptual issues around food security, food systems, sustainable agriculture
Food banking/anti-hunger work and community food security
Food security and environmental justice
Food, farming, and nutrition issues among Native Americans
Outreach to non-traditional constituencies
5. Regional Issues
Food security issues unique to New Mexico and the Southwest and their peoples
Introductory workshops to community food security
How to presentations that improve the capacity of organizations to develop
successful food projects
We encourage innovative formats and interactive sessions, with adequate time
for dialogue with attendees. We also encourage sessions that lead to a
specific outcome, and that are linked to the activities of the Community Food
Security Coalition, or building a food security movement.
Here are some session formats to consider:
• Panel presentations
• Skills-building sessions that help participants develop their capacity
for action in the project, organizing, media, or policy realms.
• Discussion groups
• Workshops in which attendees actively participate
Expect a very diverse audience in terms of occupation. They include
anti-hunger activists, policy-makers, farmers, emergency food providers,
faith-based community representatives, environmentalists, community based
organization activists, community residents, community gardeners,
nutritionists, extension agents, sustainable agriculture activists, food
system and food security organizational representatives, chefs,
researchers/academics, students, funders, and others engaged in building a
sustainable food system.
All sessions will be 90 minutes in length. Expect approximately 15-50
attendees per session.
Format of proposals
Please use the following format in your proposal.
1. Name of contact person, organization, address, city, state, zip, phone,
2. Name and organization of other presenters in your session.
3. Type of session (see above)
4. AV needs (slide or transparency projector only)
5. Title of session
6. 200 word description of the presentation, including main points and goals.
Explain what you would like the audience to learn. If your workshop is
accepted, your description will be included in an edited form in the conferenc
7. Brief bios of presenters (one paragraph or less only). No resumes or
multi-page CVs please.
You may mail, fax, or e-mail your proposal. If e-mailing from a Mac, save
your files in word 5.1, or from a PC, as an RTF file. We can't guarantee that
documents saved in other formats will be accepted.

All presenters will be expected to pay their own registration fees and travel
costs. Fee waivers may be available for low-income presenters only.
