Michaele -

You are quite correct - valid things have been said on both sides, and
many of your (and Lion's) concepts are very valid. In fact, having
just put out my broccoli starts, I was inspired to interplant
radishes - and spinach - with them. Thank you very much for your
thoughtful and helpful input. It's interesting how many different
ways we all come up with to create ecological and economic
sustainability. My partner and I have a small (ten acre) mixed farm,
with a dairy cow, laying and meat chickens, a few sheep, and seasonal
pigs (we don't have a sow); we have a small market garden, and a
large-ish hop field, where we grow hops for our integrated brewery.
The spent grains and wastewater (we treat our own) go to make compost
and to feed the livestock and water the garden. We are working on
improving the balance of our pond, which is crying for fish. Both the
farm and the brewery are organic, both very new, so we are learning
exponentially. We have received a great response on our certified
organic beer - winning two awards for our stout in two months. It is
a pleasure and an inspiration to read about others' methods for
achieving sustainability. May your season be fruitful and joyous, and
not too exhausting.

Rebecca

(Crannog Ales is a farm-integrated, zero-emissions certified organic
brewery - and we make great beer!)
