ADVANCING COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY
Roanoke, Virginia --- June 1, 2 & 3 http://www.conted.vt.edu/advcom.htm

        As public officials, business leaders, and nonprofit
organizations recognize
the need to rethink urban life to achieve environmental, social, and
economic
sustainability, this meeting will allow those seeking to foster
sustainability in their
communities to interact with practitioners who have experience with
implementing
  sustainability projects. The target audience includes state and
local public officials,
business leaders, nonprofit organization managers, and citizen
activists. Speakers will
be agency heads, department directors, private sector managers,
nonprofit organization
officers, and others who are expert in their field. Much of the
meeting time will be given
to interaction among speakers and meeting participants to allow
exploration of ways
to adapt existing ideas and projects to other communities.
        Plenary and roundtable sessions will examine the practice of
sustainability in each of three areas of community life:
(a) physical development (e.g.: infill, adaptive reuse, and sprawl
prevention),
(b) infrastructure design (e.g.: alternative transit, waste management, and
energy systems), and (c) economic structure (e.g.: industrial ecology, local
economic resilience, and job creation).
          Special evening resource sessions will focus on:

~Green Purchasing for Local Governments and Institutions,
~The Economic, Technical, and Organizational Foundations of Ecovillages,
~The Sierra Club's Anti-Sprawl Campaign,
~Federal Programs in Support of Sustainability,
~Community Development Through Sustainable Jobs, and
~Services and Resources Available through the Local Environment
          Government Assistance Network.

        Optional training workshops will give participants an opportunity
to gain knowledge or skills needed to promote sustainability in the
following areas:

~Smart Growth through Ecosystem-Based Processes - Wolfe, Mason & Associates
~Developing and Using Sustainability Indicators - The Nature Conservancy
~The Green Planning Leadership Program- Resource Renewal Institute
~Moving the Community from Confusion to Consensus on Sustainability
        -Institute for Environmental Negotiation

Location and Lodging

        The meeting will be held at The Hotel Roanoke and
        Conference Center, conveniently located at 110 Shenandoah
        Avenue in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. A covered walkway
        connects the state-of-the-art conference center with the
        restored city market in downtown Roanoke which offers dining,
        shopping, and entertainment.

        Lodging rooms are being held at the hotel and rates are
        $89 single/$99 double, plus tax. For reservations, call (540)

                     Any workshop: $100 additional
