In November 1999, the North Central Region SARE program hosted a regional
conference, Alternative Agricultural Marketing: Developing Skills for the New
Millennium. More than 375 farmers, educators, researchers, food industry
representatives, and nonprofit groups congregated in Lincoln, Nebraska, to
develop marketing skills and to foster marketing relationships for local food
systems.
Conference evaluations were positive, but also indicative of barriers farmers
face in alternative marketing, e.g. legal issues, business planning, and
consumer education. Copies of the marketing conference evaluation reports are
available. We also have extra copies of the conference notebook, which includes
abstracts from speakers and exhibitors, as well as a bibliography of resources.
And we've created an alternative marketing listserve to accommodate discussions
about marketing sustainable agricultural products in community food systems.
Another positive outcome included a cover story on the conference and farmer
participants in the mid-February 2000 issue of Successful Farming Magazine.
North Central SARE's Administrative Council will continue to support alternative
marketing and local food systems through competitive grants and other innovative
initiatives.
For copies of conference evaluations and notebooks, or to join the e-mail
discussion list, please send requests to lbauer2@unl.edu.
Thank you, and thanks to the marketing conference co-sponsors, planning
committee, and participants from 18 states!
