Hi Donald and list, Ah should a CSA be only a CSA, or should it (the farm)
have other markets. This was a lively discussion some months back on the
now seemingly defunct CSA list. A few thought CSA only for the reason you
stated "share" of harvest and others stated if the farm does not survive
financially the CSA does not survive. I agree with the later. We are
entering out 3rd year as a CSA we intend as the years go on to add a farm
stand. There is a sort of "standard" amount of produce a member can deal
with each week. I have read a seen a little bit myself that members
"complain" if they get too much produce, primarily they feel bad if it rots.
So we now hasve an idea of quanity to plant. Anything beyond that amount
would then be planted for other markets. To me the CSA is still getting
their "share" EXTRA is be planted for other markets. Idealism abounds
about farm/eater connections. I feel the connection is very important it is
what may save local ag and local open space. However I have never worked so
hard in my life as in the past 3 years and as of yet the financial benefits
have not caught up. I think with the years and some diversification it
will. It may never catch up to what I could make at a "real job"
(registered physical therapist) but so far I like it better and of course
that is a factor that is very important. Beth
I am most interested to know how you balance the harvest between your
