Hello everyone,
While I definitely agree that Ritalin is way over-prescribed, I know of at
least one adult case where a 5 month regimen has had positive lasting
effects.
My husband saw a tv show on ADD in children, and quickly called me in to
watch part of it. "That fits me! That's how things are for me! That's how my
life has been!" he said after doctors studying a boy looked to his fathers
behaviour and found similarities. Apparently, in text book cases, half of
the brain moves at one speed, and the other half is moving at a different
speed. The ritalin brings the slower half up to speed with the faster half.
After a life of frustration, my husband took this drug for 5 months. He
ended up being able to make lists and carry out simple chores in some sort
of order for the first time in his life. He was able to see linear
progression in places where it was not possible for him to before. He got to
look thru a window of what things could be like for him. This greatly helped
his frustration level, to say the very least.
He quit taking ritalin because he was wearing himself out - he was up so
many hours and just couldn't make it on the sleep he could get. Obviously
this drug is not a cure-all, and for us to use it this way just shows the
deeper cultural need for a quick fix. But that 5-month window has had
effects that improved one man's quality of life, even though it's been over
5 years since he stopped taking it.
Giving ritalin to all so-called "hyperactive" children is a sham, no doubt.
I would like to see the number stats of still speedy kids after their diets
had all the garbage sugar overload taken out.
But this would be an obvious simple test, and the drug makers would lose
$$$$.

Point of interest for those who might care ... Ritalin is a very close
analogue to cocaine.
