I can't even believe they bother saying that they want local stuff. It
is obviously false. Here in NJ, the Garden State, known for its
tomatoes, you can't even buy a good, vine-ripe tomato, IN SEASON, at a
chain supermarket.
I cannot imagine where they find the sad looking, pallid tomatoes I see
in those produce aisles. Of course, people must be buying them, so it's
hard to blame the stores. They don't even smell like tomatoes, like I'm
supposed to be suckered in by the artificial "ripening." It's enough to
make a vegetable hater out of anybody.
Produce workers have informed me that nothing is done at the local store
level. So unless you can supply and entire chain (250 stores?) at a
bargain basement price, you're out.
