DENNIS THE MENACE
The market for organic foods is growing by leaps and bounds, but in recent
months some critics, most notably Dennis Avery on a recent 20/20 segment,
have been claiming that organic products are wasteful, unhealthful, and
just plain nasty. What a bunch of hogwash, writes Donella Meadows in Grist.
She debunks a number of the critics' arguments, starting with the
contention that organic produce is dangerous because it's grown with
(horror of horrors) manure. Farmers have been using manure for millennia
because it's a highly effective fertilizer -- and living to tell the tale.
Why the recent tide of criticism? Perhaps the chemical and agrobusiness
giants are feeling threatened because newly released national organic
standards could help the organic market grow even faster.
